Malis Restaurant KTI
Kandal, 2025
Malis Restaurant at Techo International Airport brings “Living Cambodian Cuisine” to an international audience in a setting that pairs calm luxury with the energy of a new global gateway. Operated by Thalias Group, the restaurant is positioned along the main departures concourse, reading as a warm, elevated terrace while remaining distinctly Cambodian in character. The plan is organised around a clear division of front-of-house and back-of-house, with dining and bar areas designed to provide a comfortable and efficient experience for a variety of guests.
The design translates Malis’s “Boutique Luxury with Cultural Soul” into an airport context. A calm palette of terrazzo, fluted stone, timber wall panels and brushed bronze forms the backdrop to open dining and bar service. The golden silk ceiling installation serves as an iconic element, designed to attract visitors from a distance and symbolically link to Cambodia’s rich tradition of weaving. This cultural reference is further interpreted through the use of bamboo and rattan materials in screens and detailing, creating a tactile connection to heritage. Khmer motifs and crafted relief panels are handled with restraint, embedding cultural narratives without resorting to pastiche. Visualisations and elevations illustrate how Khmer motifs, textured feature walls, Buddha imagery, planting and layered lighting are combined to express Cambodian culture within a contemporary airport environment. Together, the spatial planning and material strategy produce a restaurant that operates with the precision of an international hub and presents a composed, contemporary expression of Cambodian hospitality.
