AmCam Exchange
Phnom Penh, 2025

The Room provided relocation and interior fit-out services for AmCam Exchange, the American Corner, on the ground floor of Exchange Square in Phnom Penh to enhance its accessibility and visibility as a key hub for U.S.–Cambodia cultural and educational exchange. Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh in partnership with Pannasastra University of Cambodia, the 211 sqm space includes a reception area, a library and reading lounge, a multipurpose hall with a movable stage, counseling and conference rooms, computer stations, a pantry, storage, and an A/V room. The layout is carefully planned to facilitate flexible seating arrangements and event configurations, fostering community engagement, learning, and cultural dialogue.
The design is centred on three interconnected concepts that shape the American Corner’s purpose and user experience: learning hub, community engagement, and cultural exchange. Visitors have access to a rich variety of resources and environments that support academic pursuits and skill development, including extensive English language materials, university admissions guidance, and standardized test preparation. Across the entire space, meaningful dialogue and collaboration are encouraged through forums, shared initiatives, and cultural activities that connect local and international communities. Woven into this environment is cultural exchange, which creates a welcoming setting for exhibitions, language programs, performances, and conversations that promote mutual understanding and respect. Flexible spatial configurations, including retractable partitions and adaptable furniture, allow event spaces to be easily reconfigured to suit workshops, screenings, lectures, and performances, supporting the diverse programming needs of AmCam Exchange.
A palette of dark blue, light grey, and red, combined with ergonomic, certified non-toxic materials and custom modular furniture, supports adaptability and comfort. Graphic art and branding elements reinforce the American Corner’s identity, while features like a retractable glazed partition provide versatile spatial configurations for lectures, workshops, and performances. Together, these design strategies create a contemporary, flexible environment that supports the ongoing cultural and educational dialogue between the United States and Cambodia.
